Apologies for a Scandal/Awards fun
Another apology. A polite note from Zoe Heller arrives saying she has made no complaints about Patrick Marber's adaptation of Notes on a Scandal - in fact, mindful of journalists digging for/manufacturing dissent, she has gone out of her way to praise it. "So there," she finishes. I was sure I'd seen a quote suggesting she was unhappy with certain aspects of the script, but can I find it now? No. So apologies to Ms Heller and Mr Marber, two admirable writers I'd be most loathe to annoy.
The Standard awards at the Ivy on Sunday night were a most relaxed and enjoyable affair, and I don't mean that in a ding-ding-I'm-on-the-bus-you-couldn't-come way. Good to see old hands like Stephen Frears rubbing shoulders with new talent like London to Brighton director Paul Andrew Williams, to see Daniel Craig off-guard and charming (he scared the life out of me when I interviewed him on the phone, once), to see how everybody gets on and to be able to earwig on industry gossip. And other gossip. Borat's co-creator Dan Mazer, a very witty and likeable chap who also happens to be married to Daisy Donovan, told me a hilarious anecdote about his childhood which I promise I won't reveal here if he sends me a large wad of cash to the Standard's address. A sum not unequivalent to the Gross Domestic Product of Kazakhstan would do...

Nick, I caught Mark Kermode on a culture show last week saying of Patrick Marber something like.."Closer, which I've never forgiven him for..". What was the heir to Mark Lamarr's hair on?. Both film and play were pretty top drawer for me. I'm definitely Looking forward to Notes On A Scandal.

I watched an episode of The Professionals last night and realised where Daniel Craig gets that slightly silly tough guy look as Bond. It's pure Bodie.
